Who we are
About Us
Island Care is a passionate, community-driven conservation group dedicated to preserving the unique environment of Christmas Island. Through education, hands-on action, and advocacy, we work alongside local residents and stakeholders to protect our island’s precious marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
We believe in the power of community to drive real change—whether that’s organising marine debris cleanups, safeguarding native crabs and wildlife, rehabilitating disturbed habitats, or lobbying for stronger environmental protections. Nothing is too hard when it comes to caring for the place we call home.
We inspire and involve the community, support other conservation efforts, and lead by example with determination and heart.
Together, we’re committed to protecting Christmas Island’s natural heritage for generations to come.

Educate
We believe knowledge is power. By sharing information and raising awareness, we empower our community — especially our youth — to become passionate stewards of Christmas Island’s future.
Motivate
Island Care thrives because of the people who live here. We work with the community — inspiring and involving everyone from school kids to rangers. Together, we build the drive and determination to protect our island home.
Advocate
We actively promote conservation, restoring habitats, and pushing for policies that safeguard Christmas Island’s unique ecosystems now and for generations to come.
Our Story
Island Care was started back in 1999 by a group of dedicated school teachers who wanted to make a difference. It all began with the Great Beach Cleanup, community turtle monitoring, and restoring Smith Point with weeding and tree planting.
One of our first big wins was a crab sign design competition run by local school kids—their artwork became our first official signs! We also started using rakes to protect crabs crossing busy roads, slowly shifting how the community viewed these amazing creatures. Today, traffic is diverted, roads are closed, and teams of rangers work tirelessly during crab migration season to ensure safe journeys for the crabs as they make their way to the sea to spawn.
