Working with our community to celebrate and protect the environment of Christmas Island.
We care for our environment
We’re a passionate, community-led group protecting the unique environment of Christmas Island — cleaning up marine debris, restoring habitats and safeguarding native wildlife alongside locals, schools and partners.
Guided by our core values — Educate, Motivate, Advocate. We believe real change starts with community and we’re working together to ensure the island’s natural beauty thrives for generations to come.

Caring for Christmas Island
Marine Debris
Marine debris cleanups are at the heart of our efforts to protect Christmas Island’s fragile coastal and underwater environments. We organize regular beach cleanups, promote responsible waste management, and advocate for policies that reduce pollution and preserve marine biodiversity.
Crab Protection
We protect Christmas Island’s iconic red crabs and other endemic species through habitat restoration, traffic management during migration, and community education. From supporting crab crossings to running creative awareness campaigns, we work hard to ensure their safe journey to the sea each year.
Seabirds
Our seabird program focuses on monitoring and conserving the island’s unique seabird populations. We train community volunteers and support the Seabird Rescue Centre to protect nesting sites, assist injured birds, and restore vital habitats.
Fundraising
To support our work, we fundraise by selling natural history books, tees, and stickers—helping spread awareness while raising vital funds to protect Christmas Island’s natural resources.
Island Care received funding to support a community bird conservation project through the Australian Government’s Our Marine Parks Grants program, which is managed by Parks Australia.
